Premier
creative event of Aotearoa’s cultural calendar
World of WearableArt (WOW) is the most internationally-recognised event in New Zealand’s creative calendar — a fusion of fashion, sculpture, performance and stage craft that has drawn audiences and entrants from around the world since 1987. Obvious has worked alongside WOW over multiple years, capturing photography and video coverage of the event and producing the 30th anniversary mural installation at Te Auaha, The New Zealand Institute of Creativity.
Fashionable promotion of the premier event in Aotearoa’s creative calendar
In 2018, WOW (World of WearableArt) celebrated its 30th anniversary. Our Creative Director, Ciaran Jack, has worked with WOW over the years capturing some jaw-dropping photographs and videos of the event.
For WOW’s 30th anniversary, Obvious created a mural exhibited at Te Auaha, The New Zealand Institute of Creativity, to celebrate the partnership between Te Auaha and WOW. This mural won The Big Picture’s Project of the Month for October 2018.

The mural
Our mural installation celebrates the working relationship between Te Auaha and WOW is as large and expressive as the exhibition deserves.
This exhibition at Te Auaha hosted two of the previous years’ garments (from 2016 and 2017) as part of WOW Wander’s city-wide map of historic garments that were on display at various locations in Wellington. In line with the 30th anniversary’s theme, the mural appears alien, provoking the curiosity of pedestrians on the corner of Cuba Street and Dixon Street, with animated lighting on its fragmented, reflective surfaces.
It’s crystal-like geometry appears organic, consuming the wall. Alongside an explanatory decal, a mounted digital display showcases our footage and photography of WOW from previous years.
